KATHLEEN WALTERS, RDN, LDN, IFNCP
Kathleen Walters is a registered and licensed dietitian from the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area. She holds a BS in Food and Nutrition from the University of Alabama and a BA in Political Science and Spanish from the University of Notre Dame. She completed her dietetic internship at Virginia Tech University and is a recent graduate of the Integrative and Functional Nutrition Academy. She is an active member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as well as the Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine Dietetic Practice Group. Kathleen is licensed in Florida, Washington, D.C., and Maryland, and is actively seeking new patients to serve.
Kathleen’s passion for functional medicine stems from her experience working in a pediatric outpatient gastrointestinal clinic in a major hospital for almost three years. She worked with children with eosinophilic esophagitis, celiac disease, multiple food allergies, constipation, food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, standard and blenderized tube feedings, failure to thrive, and more. She also served on a multidisciplinary feeding disorders team, working with nurse practitioners and psychiatrists to address feeding issues, which included mealtime behaviors, parent-child interactions, and nutrient deficiencies or excesses.
As a dietitian with a passion for functional medicine, Kathleen understands and appreciates the importance of functional lab testing, connecting system imbalances, and addressing root causes to help patients heal in a holistic manner. Through her own personal struggles, she has battled adult acne, gastrointestinal issues, and hormone imbalances. Rather than viewing each as a separate entity, she identified the core issues stemming from her gastrointestinal disturbances to help her heal from within.
Kathleen speaks Spanish at an advanced-intermediate level and has conducted over 200 patient consults with Spanish-speaking clients. She has lived, studied, and worked throughout Central and South America in Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Peru, Chile, and Argentina. She hopes to continue working with the Latino population through telemedicine appointments. Additionally, she has experience working with translators of a wide variety of languages and can continue seeing patients who prefer this format.
She currently lives overseas with her husband and can accommodate patients who prefer evening appointments. In her free time she enjoys traveling, creating new recipes that are nutrient-dense and still meet her husband’s “seal of approval,” salsa dancing, and ballroom dancing whenever possible.
